Moving from the corporate world into independent consulting, I find myself making decisions for my practice that formerly were made by the experts in other departments.  I would like to get input from the Patina Nation of experts on an IT question.  What antivirus software do you use and why? Thank you!

Two part answer:

  1. Assuming you mean Windows, I use what's built into Windows 10 because Microsoft maintains it. That said, I almost never install anything - only software from reputable providers. In today's world, just about everything available via SaaS/web, try to minimize what you install. I do also regularly run Malwarebytes, which scans for malware and other bad things. Other antivirus options as McAfee, AVG, Norton, Kaspersky, etc. Asking which one is a religious discussion sometimes. Make sure you install every Windows update, as well as whatever updates to installed software, as so many have to do with security.
  2. You also have to be very careful with your browser, regardless which one. Lock-down your browser as much as you can. Don't store passwords. You can/should use a password management tool, like Keeper. Don't go to weird websites if you can avoid it. Don't open attachments from people you don't know. Try to follow the guidelines of your (previous) employers, if they had 'em.

Good luck,

Yury

Thank you for your thoughtful answer, Yury.  All great suggestions!  And yes, I was hoping to spark that religious discussion about those antivirus options.  I have used Bitdefender in the past with good success.  My current system came with McAfee installed which has done well on the malware front, however, it's spam filter leaves much to be desired. Thanks again for your insights!
