What are independents experiencing in the pandemic? Let's get a pulse check. (2 of 2)
I was able to secure a new project (or more than one) in connection to the pandemic's impact in 2020.
I took a C-level project in the heart of NYC at the epicenter of the Covid pestilence. I am recovering now after having been hospitalized with pneumonia and Covid.
I have taken on several projects from firms desiring to enter the hand-sanitizer manufacturing market under FDA's special provisions, and also going forward from this time of Wuhan-virus-19 crisis, as long-term manufacturers intending to compete long-term with products such as Purell.
I secured a new project at beginning of March yet without work assigned. I am grateful the project is open. I have multiple service offerings and I am focusing and talking to small businesses now and how I may assist with basic needs of accounting and payroll which is a need now for data for getting funding assistance. Second, I supported my non-profit organization with producing an essential need and iPad donation and safe delivery effort to our focus target customer, seniors in isolation at skilled nursing centers to connect remotely to families. It is an item these healthcare centers do not have budgets for, yet tools are used daily. We approved an initial purchase of our own funds and now with the need to create the awareness of contributions to provide more.
I own a call center that supports e-commerce companies and due to the cacooning factor of consumers staying home, my business has grown by a multiple of 7 and I have doubled my staff.
We picked up two very nice retained assignments that are still ongoing. One was for a large California GPO (Group Purchasing Organization) who pivoted from their normal model of importing thousands of various SKU's from China to PPE. We were retained to provide PO financing alternatives for their growing orders, build domestic inventory, improve distribution and open up new channels in the the healthcare and government sectors. The second is a NY based professional service company in the Hedge Fund trading technology space who recently launched a Portfolio Management System (PMS) as a spin off from their consulting services. We were engaged to introduce the platform to the market and execute phase one of their strategic business plan.
I have a niche in the area of Healthcare Utilization Management, Care Management and Population Health (in particular the workflows and platforms that support them). I tend to work on transformational project work with companies. All of that work ground to a halt as organizations stopped all innovation/transformation to deal with COVID. Most indies like me are finding themselves out of work. We do not know when organizations will feel comfortable enough to move forward with these types of projects. Regardless, most of those projects will need to be retooled to deal with the new world we live in. We know COVID long term affects will make a lasting change in healthcare.
I had two projects lined up that went away when the state shut down. I have had several other contacts with new prospects that are now hanging fire until in-person meetings seem practicable. I believe that there is a lot of need for the strategy/operations alignment work that I do with business leaders; however, I suspect that many business leaders are husbanding cash pretty carefully and sufficiently busy with daily activities that they are not thinking about the value of sharpening their operational focus.
My workload is steady. I initially thought the client company may cut back. So far, things seem ok.
